Sill
Any window from your Mac, on your iPhone and iPad.
Both free. Sill for Mac needs Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later; the app needs iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later.
Sill shows a window from your Mac, or its whole desktop, on your iPhone or iPad, and lets you use it with touch, a keyboard or Apple Pencil. It streams straight from your Mac to your device over your own network, so there is no account to create and no server in between. You pair each device once, and every connection is encrypted. Both parts are free: the Sill app for iPhone and iPad, and Sill for Mac.
What you need
- A Mac with Apple silicon, on macOS 14 or later. When Sill first opens, you allow it Screen Recording and Accessibility.
- An iPhone or iPad with iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later, on the same network as your Mac.
- Away from home, your own VPN, such as Tailscale, with Remote Access turned on in Sill.
No shared network? Connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac with a USB cable, or turn on Direct Wireless Connection in Sill on your Mac.
On iPhone Duo, Sill follows the fold: open flat on its side, your Mac fills the inner display; half open like a laptop, the picture is above the fold with a trackpad and keys below; closed, Sill runs on the cover display.
Connect in four steps
- Download Sill for Mac, drag it to your Applications folder and open it. Sill lives in the menu bar.
- Allow Screen Recording and Accessibility when Sill asks. When macOS offers Quit & Reopen, choose it.
- Get Sill from the App Store on your iPhone or iPad. Open it and allow Local Network.
- Tap your Mac, and pair once: it shows a code for your iPhone or iPad to scan, and over a USB cable the two pair by themselves. Then its desktop appears, and you can pick any window from the bar.
Away from home
With Remote Access on, Sill reaches your Mac through your own VPN, such as Tailscale, or through a port you forward on your router. An iPhone or iPad you paired learns how the next time it connects to your Mac at home with Remote Access on; for one that never connected at home, choose Pair iPhone or iPad… in the Sill menu on your Mac, and tap Add a Mac… on the device. Away from home, Sill starts at a quality a slower connection can carry, and when you get home, the session moves to your network by itself.
